Merriam-Webster definition of an impediment is anything which impedes and impedes means to interfere with or slow the progress of.
The impediment, which is being used in team’s Daily Scrum, to convey any obstruction to their day to day work or anything which could jeopardize their Sprint commitment. Anything can be an impediment which obstructs development teams progress. In Scrum development team works on a cadence to find a rhythm. Anything which affects that rhythm can be called an impediment.
Impediments are a form of a waste and need to be identified. The biggest question is who should be responsible for identifying the impediment. Scrum Guide says it is Scrum Master’s responsibility is to identify and remove the impediments. However, everyone on the team shares the responsibility of identifying the impediments. During Daily Scrum, the team needs to highlight the impediment faced and look for help to resolve it.
