Working with a mentor is one of a great way to success and working as a mentor is one of the biggest ways to keep your skills honed. I have been both, A Mentee and also a Mentor. With that, I can tell you that there are right ways to approach someone to be your mentor and there are ways which will lead you to a totally different path. The people who have found the best mentor in their life will tell you that they met them at odd places and at the point of time and place where they were not seeking for a mentor. The same people will also give you the below advice.
- Be clear in your mind what exactly you are looking for?
Everybody say working with a mentor is like forming a relationship. Not everyone is like that. But before you look more into that, answer the question from your side. What are you looking for from a mentor? A relationship where you two will go for a long walk or sit down and drink coffee or are you seeking for answers to your questions and guide you through?
- Just don’t look for a mentor. Be open to receiving help from others
Mentors are everywhere. Look to your left and you will find someone who can certainly guide you in something, look to your right and you will find someone you can guide you through another thing. Sometimes when we look for a specific person, we tend to ignore the best people who can help you better than the person you are looking for.
- Ask open-ended question and seek advice
Your mentor will certainly not have answers to your problems but for sure will have plenty of experience to share with you. Don’t seek for what you should do in particular situation. Don’t ask questions which can be answered with just yes or no. Engage in a conversation where you can learn from their experience.
- Understand that it is a two-way street
Don’t be a mentee who just receives and receives. Mentorship is about helping each other in the best way. It is for the benefit of both, a mentor and a mentee.
